The Russian Blue is a naturally occurring cat breed with a history shrouded in mystery and folklore. While its exact origins are uncertain, the breed is believed to have originated in Russia, specifically in the port city of Arkhangelsk (Archangel) in the north. This connection has led to its early nickname, the “Archangel Cat.”

Russian Blue Characteristics
Russian Blues are a strong and beautiful breed, with firm muscles and a slender, elegant form. Their coat is a gorgeous blue gray color. Silky and plush, the hair stands out at an angle. They are a low shedding breed.
As kittens they are born with blue eyes. As they mature the eye color evolves into a captivating bright green ranging from light green to a deeper emerald green.
One unique feature of this breed is its “smile.” It has a slightly upturned mouth that makes it seem like it is smiling at you. Smiles are contagious so it’s hard to be sad when you have a smiling blue around.

Russian Blue: Hypoallergenic or Not?
Russian Blue are said to be hypoallergenic, which means they produce fewer allergens than other breeds. They have lower levels of Fel D 1, the protein in cat saliva and skin secretions responsible for producing allergic reactions. This is one reason why people with allergies are drawn to the Russian Blues. It is important to note, however, that there is no such thing as an 100% hypoallergenic pet.
